CW Reign "In a Clearing" Recap

"In a Clearing"

The episode started with Francis walking into the chapel were  Mary praying; he told her that she was down there for a long time, and she replied that she had a lot to be thankful for every time he walked into a room “that’s so cute.” Francis told her he can’t help but be thankful for Marie de Guise dying in place of him. Mary told him that there was no way they could know that her life was the one to get sacrificed for his and that maybe she was just sick for a long time and died, therefore, she felt no remorse “they weren’t that close.” Francis told Mary that she needs to appoint a new regent in Scotland, and she’d suggested her half-brother James, which Francis was a little concerned about but Mary told him that’s he may be Protestant, but he’s family and he is loyal to her “loyalty goes a long way.” The Monarchs are in a great place, so Nicholas decided that this would be the perfect time to present Mary with an intriguing offer from Elizabeth “more like a deceptive offer.” Nicholas told Mary that Elizabeth realizes that the war in Scotland isn’t benefiting anyone, and she’s ready to make peace “there is not a peaceful bone in Elizabeth’s body.”

However, this agreement can only be made if Mary agrees to withdraw her claim to the English throne “that’s not a deal back the trap.” Francis can’t believe Mary would even consider signing such a Peace Accord and told her Mary that her claim is her birthright and her most precious possession “Francis is so right.” Mary, however, believes this may be the only way to have peace in Scotland, and told Francis that he was her most precious possession “so much love.” Mary has decided to give her brother a chance at ruling a unified Scotland, so she and Francis sign the accord “this is such a bad idea.” Nicholas thanked Mary that on behalf of Elizabeth's, he told her he was pleased to announce the country between the two countries has finally come to an end. Francis told Nicholas that Queen Mary has made a big sacrifice in the name of peace and Mary to Nicholas that they would make the Accord public at a later date “this sure came in handy.” As Francis told Mary that she will have to settle for being the queen of two countries instead of three one of Catherine guards came in to tell Francis that his present is requested by his mother. Catherine’s is very excited about Francis second chance in life and decided to celebrate by redecorating and talking nonstop about Francis and Mary having a baby “I haven’t seen Catherine looked this happy since she had her dainty but fierce hands around Diane’s neck.” However, Catherine’s celebrating was short-lived with Nostradamus “the bearer of bad news” returning to tell her that Francis may not be in the clear because he had a strange vision again “I am a big fan of Nostradamus but hate visions.” Nostradamus detailed his vision to Catherine telling her he saw a tree in a clearing with white flowers covered in blood, and so on and he fears the danger is not over for Francis and advises Catherine must warn him “not again.” Catherine told Francis about Nostradamus the visions, and he brushes it off, telling her that though he appreciates her concern, she can’t keep him in a cage “yes you can Catherine lock him in the dungeon.” Francis expressed to her that he wants to enjoy this second chance he’s have being given, not waste it worrying about what may or may not be fated “YOU NEEDED TO WORRY.” Francis later planned a romantic trip to Paris with Mary to dance under the stars at the Louvre “this is the hardest block I had to write so far.”

The romantic gesture warms Mary's heart, who is still relishing and the fact that Francis was given a second chance, and can’t keep her hands off her husband “who would want to.” On their way to Paris Mary had the carriage pull over and suggests a little skinny-dipping pit stop “this just made Francis dying so much harder.” They went into the water where they enjoy their newly founded happiness, and enjoyed “really enjoyed,” their time together “I hope that made a baby.” Delphine has been welcome back to court after saving Francis his life, and she feels pretty bad that she bound Bash’s soul to her soul using the blood/sex/magic ritual without asking “I am conflicted by it being sexy and creepy.” Bash accepted Delphine offer to unbind them after she told him that the process is painful and not for the faint of heart “Bash his tough he can take it.” Delphine commends the unbinding by covering Bash with squid ink and holding him underwater in a bathtub for a while “she almost drowned him, but it worked.” Another side effect so the unbinding is Delphine being vulnerable to an even stronger connection with the serial killer they’ve been tracking. Bash smartly uses this connection to his advantage, and they discover the killer’s home base a stable with a hidden door that leads to a room full of jars holding his victims’ hearts. Bash Thanks Delphine for her help and as the two was about to share a kiss Delphine collapsed rowing in the moment “I never mind because I am team

Bash Thanks Delphine for her help and as the two was about to share a kiss Delphine collapsed rowing in the moment “I never mind because I am team Grebash.” Mary lets Francis rest while she went back to the carriage to get food  and got grabbed by an imposing group of men “oh snap.” Francis gets dressed to head back to the carriage and noticed something was not right and goes looking for Mary “great observation.” He heard her struggling and runs after her, and takes on all of Mary’s captors without hesitation “where are the damn guards.” He’s brave and gallant, but he still ends up getting his head bludgeoned into the ground repeatedly, but looked over at Mary in danger and got the strengths to defeat the guy in a rescue Mary “the power of love.” Soon after Mayor was free Francis walked a few feet away to check that all the men are gone he collapsed, Mary ran over to be by his side “Oh Francis.” Francis knowing was the end told Mary that they were given a gift of a few extra days to be happy together, but this is his true fate. He asks Mary to make sure John is cared for, and to stay in France until Catherine becomes regent, but most importantly, he asks her to love again “this was so hard to write.” Mary is grieving, and in shock that she can’t bring herself to leave Francis’s lifeless body in the forest “poor Mary.”  Catherine received the news of Francis death and went into the forest where she physically had to pull Mary away from Francis’s body and to embraced each other as they mourn Francis’s death “I am still mourning Francis’s that’s.” (In the comments tell me if you think this will make Catherine and Mary’s relationship better or worse.) Catherine’s grief took the form of sadness and a renewed sense of urgency in becoming regent,

while Mary’s grief is just plain, old anger “in the few other words.” Mary still wearing her gown covered in Francis’ blood, stormed in to see the Nicholas chamber and fervently accuses Elizabeth of being behind the attack “Elizabeth is very wicked so I wouldn’t put it past her.” Mary filled with rage is sure Elizabeth used the accord was a distraction because the only way Mary isn’t a threat to Elizabeth is if she’s dead. Nicholas insisted repeatedly that Elizabeth is incapable of such a wicked act and wouldn’t want to set a precedent for murdering monarchs “I’m still not putting it past her.” Mary then grabs the peace accord, still yet to be made official with Elizabeth’s signature, and tosses it into the fire, and told Nicholas that’s England cannot have her birthright and that they have taken enough from her this day “I hate to see Marilyn this.” Mary then runs into the throne room and tears down the new banners removing all evidence that the accord ever existed, and then screams help with her pain “on Mary I feel your pain.”

Mary tries to keep it together as the funeral rolled around, while standing over Francis’s caskets, Narcisse told her that based on information he gathered the assassins were in fact not the English but from Scotland “say what now.” Narcisse explained to Mary that a group of radical Scottish Protestants are fighting for self-government and wanted to eliminate Mary before she could appoint a new regent “Mary can think about that right now.” Mary apologizes to Catherine for being the cause of France’s death as Nostradamus had predicted and hands over the Queen of France’s crown but Catherine makes it clear to Mary that she does not blame her. Catherine told Mary that she made her son happy, however, Catherine has to play nice with Mary since Nostradamus’ parting words where that’s the only way she can become regent is working with the Queen of Scots “which makes Catherine sincerity questionable.” (In the comments tell me if you think Catherine was being sincere.) Catherine reminds Mary that she’s strong, and Mary will need to remain strong for the road ahead especially if the English have anything to do with it “she’s strong that anything.” Mary goes sailing on Francis’ boat, the last time she was on the boat, she was having trouble with the sail and Francis had promised to help her “the first 10 minutes the episode.” This episode was phenomenal, heart-wrenching, and awesome I would rate it 10 out of 10.
