The episode starts with a drone scan. There’s a nun walking in the shadow. There’s blood. There’s a rift. There’s Lash.
Fitz is doing calculations. May and Coulson are worried about him, but he tells them that they have bigger things to worry about. He sent the drone. There is a forest 150 feet below them on level 27. He thinks that the rift is what happens when all three of the monoliths are blown up together. They created a rift in space-time, and another dimension is bleeding into this one.
Simmons is helping Yo-Yo. She says that Daisy is getting more supplies to help keep her comfortable. Then Mack comes in and she leaves them to talk.
He offers to quit and carry her out of here. She appreciates the offer, but says no. She needs to fight.
Daisy and Deke are looking for meds for Yo-Yo. He sprays some kind of orange scented spray in his mouth and explains to Daisy that his mom would get him an orange every year for his birthday.
He tries to get her to open up. She tells him that she grew up in an orphanage run by scary nuns. Then they get attacked by a Kree. Daisy shoots him and he dissolves.
Fitz tells that the dimension that’s bleeding into ours is a fear dimension. It can get in their heads and manifest their worst fears physically. The forest is Deke’s fear. Fitz has a potential fix, but someone may have to sacrifice themselves. Deke declares himself not it when Fitz asks for his belt buckle. Fitz is going to use the gravitonium inside it to seal the rift, but someone will have to physically put it in the rift, and that person may get sucked in or killed by a manifestation.
Coulson volunteers and then all hell breaks loose. Fitz wants to use Piper. May and Daisy both volunteer. Daisy and Coulson get into a huge fight and then he passes out.
Coulson talks to Deke. He hands Deke some glasses and tells him to get a list of things.
Simmons says that necrotic tissue is branching out from Coulson’s death wound. Coulson’s known since Ghost Rider. He burned through “the alien voodoo” that was keeping him alive. Daisy says that they had a solution. Tess was brought back from the dead. Coulson says that he didn’t want to go through that again. Daisy storms out. Simmons tells him that at some point his heart will just stop. Coulson says he’s going to check on Daisy, but then May chimes in. He put too much on Daisy.
Daisy says as much. She can’t do any of this without him. There is no S.H.I.E.L.D without him. He believes in her though. He thinks she can do anything.
Yo-Yo wakes up. Simmons is there and tries to kill her. Mack saves Yo-Yo, and the real Simmons shoots the LMD.
Deke is outside. It’s become a military outpost. Hale found out about Daisy getting Deke out of prison and finds out that there are no records for him. He has trouble using a payphone and bumps into someone.
May and Coulson talk. He’s accepted death. This is why he didn’t go through with their relationship. He didn’t want her to waste her time on another lost cause. She tells him that none of them will ever give up on him. He says that he has every intention of getting out of the basement because he’s in no hurry to die.
Fitz explains what to do and the gear and everything. Coulson makes Fitz promise to do “that other thing” no matter what happens.
Coulson heads to the basement. Daisy has visual of him. He makes a Buffy and a Ghostbusters reference before communication cuts out. He sees Mike Peterson, who is very nice and tells him to take off his helmet. Coulson does. Mike says that everything is in his head. He’s still on the operating table. The last five years have been in his imagination.
The rest of the team is getting antsy. They aren’t used to just sitting there and waiting.
Coulson gets what he’s doing. Mike is a manifestation of Coulson’s fear of death. Mike keeps going. He says that the whole team is a manifestation of all the things that he never did with his life. He says that he’s an EMT.
There’s an aircraft incoming. It’s a Quinjet with Deke, the real Deathlok, and lots of S.H.I.E.L.D redshirts.
Mike shows Coulson the rift. He says that Coulson can literally walk into the light. For a second, it looks like Coulson might do it, but he doesn’t buy it. Mike attacks him but is killed by Deathlok. Lash and Deathlok fight until Deatlok kills him. Then Roaches come in. Coulson activates the device. While they try not to get sucked in, Hive shows up. They both fight him, but Deathlok kills him.
Hale thinks that Deke is an LMD because he doesn’t exist. There have been other Daisy Johnson sightings, so they decide to pack it up.
Coulson, Fitz, and Deke are in the elevator. The gravitonium is a Band-Aid. They’ll need to find a more permanent solution. Fitz talks about the one person that they couldn’t have done this without. Deke thinks it’s him, but it’s obviously Deathlok. Deathlok isn’t staying though. He’s leaving after the night’s festivities. That’s when you notice that Fitz is wearing a suit. Coulson says he’s stalling. Full warning, I’m going to be in caps lock for the rest of this.
