Oh my Jesus it's finally here! The Season 9 premiere of AMC's The Walking Dead is finally here and I got an exclusive 24-Hour advance to watch it. And oh my damn was it amazing! Fans have been waiting eagerly for this day and I am here to recap it for you!
As the episode began, Rick recapped the hell that was Negan's reign. "We deserve to live in peace. Negan and The Saviors tried to take that away from us. Alexandria, The Hilltop, The Kingdom and Oceanside came together to fight for a better future. We won. But not without great pain and losses. We try to heal and forgive. Work begins. The New World begins." It cuts to the outside of Alexandria and a person on horseback trots to the gate. A year and a half has passed since the Savior Was ended and things have greatly changed. Alexandria has a more welcoming sign. Crops are growing and the Church has even been rebuilt. There is a floating bridge across the pond. Various solar items power the homes like never before. It then shows Judith painting. And, she's talking! She tells Michonne of her drawing and a drawing of her and Carl is seen as Rick comes out. She tells Rick that she is drawing him with a grumpy face and "a big tummy." Michonne laughs. Her, Rick and Michonne go into a grass field and they watch the hundred of crows flock into the sky. The scene cuts to The Sanctuary where Eugene radios for Tara and all to meet up at the designated rally spot. They head to the capitol. Michonne and Rick take out the street walkers before they move on. When it cuts to the credit sequence, there is a revamped opening sequence.
When it comes back, a walker is seen snarling and growling. Michonne kills it quickly and they move in. The building is in complete disarray. Rick kills the lonesome walker. Formally known as Jadis, Anne stares as a green poster. They split up and search. Maggie smiled and says "This is gonna work." They enter a room where a glass floor is below their feet and a large number of walkers below that mozie along. They walk easy. As they get to the stairs, a walker and concrete comes tumbling down. Daryl takes the killshot. Anne, Rick, Siddiq and Father Gabriel move and find the drawers full of airlumed seeds after a close encounter with Siddiq and a spider riddled walker. Rick smiles and asked Anne how she knew those would be there. She tells him that she remembered them from when she used to teach. Ah, some insight to Anne. After They grab their fill, they search some more. Gabriel kills a walker and Anne makes a pun about the "de-evolution" of mankind. Daryl and Cindy gather a canoo and exchange a quick bond over their brothers. Daryl admits that he's still sad in so many words. Michonne praises Maggie on her win as leader at The Hilltop. She spots a poster that reads 'A More Perfect Union'. Maggie finds a plow that the blacksmith can model additionals after. The group then leads a wagon down the stairs slowly. The glass is beginning to crack so they move slowly. They get the wagon to safety. Maggie and Cindy get the plow to safety and Rick and Daryl get the canoo. The King and Carol get the second plow almost into safe hands when the glass shatters. Ezekiel throws it and is hung in the air by a rope. Walkers pull on him from below and the group pulls from above. Daryl shoots a walker that was about to chomp down and they pull him to safety. Carol hugs and kisses her king and they head out of the city.
After a quick sweep by Daryl, they begin to go home in route B. Alden talks with Ken and Marco. Carol and Ezekiel take up the back. He admits to her that he was scared but then remembered he had to do one thing. He pulls out a ring and smiles. She tells him to put the ring away and to not propose on horseback. He says he loves her. Rosita and Daryl come flying back with bad news. A bridge is out from the storm. They discuss routes then take route D. There's too much mud for the wagons. They pull the one they just pulled from the Capitol and they load up supplies. When the walkers get too near, they ditch the wagon but Ken can't leave the horse. He runs back only to be bitten... Siddiq works quick with Maggie and Enid but to no avail. Ken died from blood loss after the amputation. She puts a knife through his skull. Maggie tells Earl and Tammy about their son's death. Tammy cannot except the fact that she let this happen to him. She calls her husband out of his name and he leaves. She tells Maggie that she is not to attend his funeral. Maggie holds Hershall and watches from tbe balcony as the service is going. Gregory even speaks. Afterwards, he gives Tammy a bottle of booze and she chugs it straight until she is sloppy drunk, Earl having to carry her home and Gregory coming to "chat." Gregory fills Earl full of lies about Maggie as they drink. He says that her poll votes were rigged. Gregory plays him like a fiddle.
After their trip to the city, Daryl, Rick and Co arrive at the Sanctuary. They are relived to see them. Laura told Daryl that their haul was good and that he should tell them. He snapped then apologized and told them of Ken's death. Rick tells them of their find and that they planned to save The Sanctuary's crops. "The famous Rick Grimes." They said and applauded. Afterward, Rick and Daryl talk. Daryl doesn't want to be at the Sanctuary anymore. He hates being behind the walls. Rick says he'll need him at Alexandria if they send another away. But he doesn't want that. He wants to be at The Hilltop. Rick says things are different now and Daryl disagrees. He said that their small group was right. Daryl says he changed everything. Then, he leaves. Carol was on the staircase.
Daryl was smoking when Carol came out to join him. She crushed his cigarette and told him that they would kill him. They both admit that they can't sleep yet Ezekiel on the other hand sleeps like a baby. Daryl tells her "I bet he snores fancy, too." He admits that he's happy she's happy. She tells him of Ezekiel's proposal but turned him down. That surprised Daryl. She admits that she wasn't sure at the moment. Then, she tells him that she wants to help at the Sanctuary. Daryl offers to stay but she tells him that she doesn't need it. At Alexandria, Rick washed his face before he climbs into bed with Michonne. They snuggle up. She smiles and said "Ah, the famous Rick Grimes." He groaned and said "Oh God Damnit, not you too." She brings up the fact that maybe they should have killed Negan. He tells her that they made the right decision. After some talking, Michonne and Rick agree to come up with a community charter. He asks her "how did I get so lucky finding you?" She responded "we've both lost enough, it's time we won a little, don't you think?" Then, she climbs on top of him and says "The Famous Rick Grimes" again and he laughs.
Maggie was walking baby Hershal in the stroller when Gregory popped up. Baiting her, he tells her that she is the rightful leader and that it's hard just like Tammy's decision to keep her at bay from the funeral. He sneaks in there that someone may have defaced Glenn's grave and she races to go see. She is immediately ambushed and she fights back. Enid comes but is knocked out cold. Then, Alden, Marco and Cindy come and they see it's Earl. Maggie immediately confronts Gregory and after a few word tangles, he tries to stab her but she wrestles it free and she holds it to his throat. The next morning, Ezekiel and Carol are saying their fairwell's. She tells him that she needs to help her friends but what she keeps in her mind is that she has a home to return to. She tells him that she hopes he excepts that and, he does. He tells 'Lady Carol' that he is willing to move at whatever pace she is comfortable with. Jerry rounds up the horses and she tells him to watch over the King. "You got it, boss." Jerry tells Carol.
Daryl, Michonne and Rick ride into Hilltop. Maggie meets them. Rick is seen holding baby Hershal and calls him perfect. Maggie says jokingly that she'll keep him. Then, they talk about Rick's handing over leadership. Rick tells her that she has been generous but he needs her generosity one more time. She says she will provide The Sanctuary with food but only if they hand over all the corn etch gas and if they repair the downed bridges. Rick comes to the Sanctuary's defense. Maggie isn't having it. She then tells him that it's time for the kids to be in bed. As night falls, they prepare for a hanging. She tells the Hilltoppers that the crime that was committed must be dealt with accordingly. By death. She says that the community needs to know that the price is punishable by death. Just as she tells Daryl to commence the hanging, kids run out. Michonne tried to warn her but it was too late. Gregory was hanged. She tells them that she does not want to go through with another hanging. Then, Gregory's lifeless body was dropped and the premiere came to an ending!
