Episode 2 of The Walking Dead was a slower-paced action packed romantic and Whisperer filled episode that left us in oohs, awes, and oh my god's. "The Bridge " was proof yet again that Rick Grimes is the one and only Sheriff who's truly in charge.
Episode 2 of the new season started off with Rick meeting up with Negan in his cell. He laid out everything to him that happened in this episode. He told him that it was the thirty fifth day after they began building the bridge. Rick said that not long before, they were fighting for survival. But, it was different now. They were equipped to deal with the dead as they grew and reshaped the world they knew into something better. "We are making A New Beginning."
When the episode came back, the camp was buzzing with life. Ezekiel was dressing Henry in his armor and telling him that he should be proud of the things he had done around there. He told Henry that one day he would be leading his grandkids over the bridge and telling them the story of how it became . Henry was turned off by a story about "a boring bridge" until Ezekiel told him that it was the foundation of the train between the communities. Carol came and Henry was off. Carol said he was forgetting something so he came back for a peck on her cheek. Not what she meant but she happily excepted. He grabbed his staff and was on his way. Carol and Ezekiel talked for a short while before they began work. She told Ezekiel it would be only a little longer of her being gone. Ezekiel is happy because there was a "hell no" to losing his fairy tale. When Rick emerged from his tent, he was given a run down of both structure and manpower update. They're down six Saviors. Rick visits the infirmary where Siddiq is relieved of camp duty because he is needed back home because of a bug. Afterwards, he is informed that food is low but reassures Eugene that Michonne was on that.
Michonne arrived to the Hilltop as Maggie was saddle training a horse. She needed to speak to her about Hilltop supporting The Sanctuary for just a little longer. Michonne says that the ethanol was sent out but no Savior had arrived. Then, the topic of Earl surfaced and Maggie blew it off. Maggie welcomed Michonne to stay the night at Hilltop for it was a long ride back.
Work was in full swing as Henry made his rounds with the water. As he made it to Justin, complications arised. Daryl and Aaron had just laid down the last board and made a joke of Daryl being a good Dad when Henry suddenly dropped Justin with his staff. Justin insued but Daryl intervened. Justin threw sand in Daryl's face then tackled him but Daryl quickly regained. Rick and Eugene were discussing other bridges and had just come to the curve when they saw the fight and rushed to the bridge. Rick quickly broke it up and dismissed everyone back to work. Daryl, Rick and Carol discussed why actions hadn't been taken and Daryl asked Rick if they were both on the same side. He told Rick that he had been trying to tell him that the Saviors weren't ones to work with but he hadn't listened. He left. Carol told Rick that Daryl was right that some weren't ready to work together and suggested that he and Daryl talk it out. She leaves and Rick is left with frustration and too many decisions.
Michonne was inside Maggie's office when she heard Tammy and Jesus speaking. She begs to see Earl for he's all she has. She tells him that she has rights. Jesus tells her to give Maggie "a little bit." As a final stand, she tells Jesus to tell Maggie that she will be sitting there on a stool until she came to talk to her. Jesus acknowledged that and left. Michonne met up with him and asked if he was going to tell Maggie. He told Michonne that he stands with Maggie's decision but he isn't against a grieving mother seeing her husband. Michonne tells Jesus that that's why they need to work out something bigger than any one of them. Back at the camp, lunch is being served. Anne was drawing something for Gabriel. A woman. Anne thanks him for giving her a chance as Rick did. They both admit that Rick saved them and something happens... Romance??? She touches his hand but he nervously pulls away. It cuts away to Maggie playing with baby Hershal and a wall of her family; Glenn, Hershal, Beth, and a few others. Jesus brings up Tammy and Maggie asks if she made a mistake. He politically answers "you're a good person and sometimes good people don't always agree." Maggie brings Tammy to see Earl. She listened closely. Back at the camp, Rosita and Arat set the first call for a herd redirect.
Maggie visted Earl and had him tell her about his drinking. He told her that he had been a drunk before the day Ken was born. What sobered him was when he went to pick Ken up from the babysitter and the sitter tried to take his keys but couldn't and he could not rememeber how Tammy got there but she arrived and drove them all home. He hadn't touched a drop until Gregory... Then, he asked Maggie why she hung Gregory and not him. She left without an answer. Back at camp, they start off the first siren. Tara watched from above and wait... Was... Was that a Whisperer??? What appeared to be a whisperer redirected another and they moved. Alden calls to Rick but so does Tara. He tells him that none of the Saviors have returned home. Tara raidios again. The second siren didn't signal and the herd was headed straight for the lumber yard. They were hard at work when the mules panicked and signaled Daryl. Daryl had a guy get the mules to safety and he went to help the others. But, Aaron is hurt. Aaron's arm is mangled by a massive log. Daryl kills walkers that are closing in then they get Aaron from under and they move. Then, what appears to be a Whisperer grabs Daryl and turns him but Rick and co comes to their aid and wipes out walkers. Then, Rick shoots the log basin and logs wipe out the herd. Daryl gets Aaron to Enid and she has to pull out a medical guide for amputation. Daryl holds Aaron down and Aaron tells Enid "you can do it. Do it! Do it!" And, she does it. Afterwards, Daryl darts out of the infirmary and goes to where Carl is getting on someone. Justin . Daryl lights Justin up about not setting off the Siren. Then, he commences to beating his ass which was long overdue. Carol pulls hin away after many good licks and Daryl tells her there is only one way to deal "with those assholes."
Michonne and Maggie speak as she looks over The Hilltop. She tells Michonne that she's thought about her "law" idea. The only thing she won't change is keeping what's best for her people in mind. She then told Michonne that she's having Jesus load up all the gathered food for The Sanctuary and she has Earl on watched work. Michonne is surprised of Maggie's turn around and asked what made her change her mind. Maggie tells her of Hershal and his second chance that was given. He told her tha was the difference because he was given chance after chance and never learned his lesson.
Back at the camp, Justin comfronts Rick saying he needs to keep his dog (Daryl) on leash. Rick tells him to repeat himself and Justin does. Rick then tells him that he knows "dipshits" like him because they used to pick them up every Saturday night back when he was a sheriff. Rick then tells Justin to pack his shit and leave because the next time "stitches won't fix what I do to you." He tells Rick that he won't be staying until morning. It switches over to Daryl watching over Aaron as he sleeps. Rick compliments Enid on her work and she says he'll be fine if infection doesn't set in. Rick apologizes to Aaron for him baring the price for his own mistake of rushing the bridge. Aaron admits he's just happy to have been a part of Rick's "Ga New Beginning." Gabriel and Anne are on watch as he tells her the noises of the frogs are actually mating calls. "There's a crazy frog party going on out there." She asked him about the woman she drew and he told her she was his church organist who he cared for dearly. After a minute of pursuasion, Gabriel kissed Anne then Anne began unbuckling his pants. Rick joins the camp from a distance and smiled at each and every one of them. Jerry and Henry played, Laura and Arat told a story and Ezekiel and Carol spoke. She asked if he still had the ring. Jumping the gun, he thought she meant she wanted the proposal but she just wanted to try it on for size. "But I wrote a speech" he pouted. She smiled and told him to read it later. He smiled and put the ring on her finger. Then, Rick smiled at how happy Carol was.
Back at Negan's cell, Rick told Negan that that day was a good day. He told him that Aaron lost an arm and the project is a behind the schedule. He told Negan that people were at each others throats but even though that happened, most came together as the human nature tells them to do. Negan asked when he'll get to see what Rick has created and Rick tells him that he's gonna die behind the bars he sat in. Negan asks if he'll get a final request before death. Then, he told Rick "You think because you had a little weenie roast you got all this on lock? When it finally goes to shit and it will , you make sure you come back and tell me all about that day, too." Rick adds the fact that they're thriving without a Negan leader. Negan asked Rick what he's building this future for. "For Carl?" This anger and he tells Negan not to speak his son's name. Negan says Rick's family is gone, same as his. "Its not the future, it's a monument to the dead. You're not saving the world, Rick. You're just getting it ready for me."
Anne was on the boom crane when she heard and saw the helicopter. In the final scene of the episode, it shows Justin drinking on his way back to the Sanctuary. He is startled then recognizes the guy. Then, the mysterious stranger pulls Justin in and the episode cuts to black!
