The Pearson triplets are having a really bad day! "Number One," last week's episode was Kevin's story. This week it's Kate's story.
Toddler Kevin is on the move and now the focus is on Kate taking her first steps. Kate is on her feet but isn't quite ready to walk. Jack tries but there's no rushing Kate. She won't take a step until she's ready.
Present day Kate is having a little chat with the baby while she takes her vitamins. As Kate makes a list of questions for her next doctor's appointment, Toby makes Kate a green smoothie chock full of vitamins to keep Kate and the baby strong.
Kate heads to the bathroom. Toby hears a noise and then Kate calling out to him. The next moment, Kate and Toby are in the ER and the doctor delivers the news that she lost the baby.
It's the day of Randall's meeting with the college coach, and teenage Kate is listening to music in her room with her dog, Louie at her side. When the fuse blows and the house go dark, poor Louie has an accident - panic pee - as Kate calls it. Kate heads to the kitchen and finds Rebecca trying to fix the cake she made. Jack fixes the fuse, and the lights come back. Kate is in the living room cleaning up the dog, and Rebecca asks Kate if she's made her list of 5 colleges that she's interested in attending. Kate is annoyed with her mom and unwilling to talk to Rebecca about college. Doorbell rings. Coach has arrived.
It's the morning of the fated football game, and Randall and Jack are off to Harvard for Randall's college tour. Jack hates that he won't be there for the game. As Kate gets ready for school, Rebecca tries to talk to Kate about college again. It doesn't go well. No matter what Rebecca says or does when it comes to Kate, she can't seem to get it right. Kate leaves for school and Rebecca spies the completed college application for Berklee College of Music. She finds Kate's audition tape and listens to it. It's Kate singing "Summertime."
Kate and Toby are dealing with the miscarriage very differently. Toby wants just to spend a quiet day at home, but Kate plans to keep her singing gig that afternoon. Nothing Toby will change Kate's mind. She agrees to let Toby pick her up afterward though. Rebecca keeps calling. Kate won't pick up.
But, when Kate sees a mom and her little girl dancing to the music, Kate is overcome with emotion and leaves the stage. Another call from Rebecca. She starts to call Toby but decides to just walk instead. As Kate walks, she spies a local buffet restaurant and heads inside. She loads up her plate with food and is preparing to deal with her sorrow with food. She pushes the food away though and heads home.
It seems most people either like Toby or hates him. I really love Toby. He can be annoying, but there is no denying the depth of his love for Kate. When he gets an alert that the Swedish bathtub they purchased for the baby will be delivered, Toby races to the warehouse to try and intercept the package before Kate sees it. He meets Carl, who works at the warehouse and though unwilling to help Toby at first, Toby "convinces" him to help. The package is found, Toby gives it to Carl.
Back to teenage Kate who is sitting in the stands with Rebecca at the football game. Rebecca admits that she knows about Berklee and that she listened to the audition tape. Kate has pissed that her mother snooped but seems relieved when Rebecca tells her that she thinks Kate has a great chance of getting in. Just then, Kate notices Kevin on the ground, and Rebecca sends her to call Jack.
As Rebecca and Kate wait in the hospital, Rebecca reaches out to Kate one more time. Kate apologizes to Rebecca for not telling her about Berklee. Kate says that she was afraid Rebecca would be too disappointed if she didn't get accepted. Rebecca tells Kate about her mother and how cold she could be. Rebecca says that she dreamed she'd have a daughter one day and if she did, she would do things differently. She imagined a relationship where her daughter would run into her arms whenever she needed her. But that's never happened with the two of them. Rebecca tells Kate that her arms will be open for Kate, always. It's my favorite moment of this episode.
While Toby is out looking for Kate, she arrives back home. Rebecca calls again and this time Kate picks up. She tells Rebecca about the baby but quickly hangs up on her mom. Toby comes home and is relieved that Kate is okay but angry that she is shutting him out. They argue and Kate tells Toby that the miscarriage happened to her - not to him. Toby is hurt and tells Kate that it most certainly happened to him too. He needs air and leaves the apartment.
Kate is resting when there is a knock on the door. Thinking Toby has forgotten his key, Kate is surprised to find Rebecca at the door. Rebecca's arms are wide open and Kate falls into them and lets the tears come. Rebecca shares with Kate how she dealt with the loss of baby Kyle. Kate realizes that Rebecca understands what she's going through. Their shared grief brings mother and daughter together. Rebecca tells Kate that she must open up to Toby.
Toby returns home and is surprised to find Rebecca sitting on his couch. She leaves to give Kate and Toby their privacy. Kate tells Toby hows she's feeling and that she wants to try and get pregnant again.
As the five Pearson's leave the hospital with Kevin in a wheelchair, Jack, and Rebecca, head outside to get the car. Kate sees them in the parking lot - Jack is crying and watches as her mom comforts him. I think at that moment Kate realizes how much her parents love each other.
The final scene of this episode takes us back the three toddlers. Jack and Rebecca are still trying to get Kate to walk. She's so close but isn't quite ready. Randall is prepared and here comes "number three."
Next week is Randall's story. It's also the last episode before the fall finale. I think we're close to the fire and that would certainly make for a great cliffhanger, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
